Katelynn Ryan

St. Vrain Valley School District
Social Studies Teacher
Erie Middle School
My name is Katelynn Ryan and I am a 7th and 8th grade social studies teacher at Erie Middle school! Before I was hired as a full time teacher I substituted in all grade levels for 3 years and long term subsitutted at the elementary, middle and high school levels.

I use the workshop method as an outline for my classes and then have tweaked, trimmed and added things based on experience and further learning since then. I started using these teaching methods in my classroom three years ago after learning about the workshop method on a teaching blog, and adding in my understandings gained about how best to improve student achievement and the use of Tier 1 teaching practices through 60+ credit hours of PD in the svvsd district.

I also teach three classes for the district: Creating Online PD parts 1 and 2, Working with the Workshop method and Practical student engagement

On a personal level these changes I made to my teaching also allow me to leave my teaching at the door when I leave at night so that my nights and weekends I can be with my family and focus on being a human being and not a teacher 24-7. I also find that I am more capable of supporting students in the classroom in real time and that I do not take their misunderstanding or confusion personally. Before I implimented these methods I realized I was doing the majority of the work and the learning for my students and that's why I was so tired, frustrated, and worn down.

I have my Masters of Science in Education with an emphasis on Organizational Managment and Change Leadership as well as ELL Teaching and Learning.

I am an avid sports fan and I live in Longmont with my husband and young son (Thaddeus aka Tadd) who was born on May 4th, 2016.

What I like the most about the teaching methods I use is that they allow for the organic use of the best teaching practices, they support students in important learning skills not just content, and it helps me create a better work/life balance. Especially important with a young son at home!
